First Capital Garden is a five-year project leading to a July 4, 2026 public launch at the U.S. Semiquincentennial in Philadelphia.
FCG celebrates the role of Philadelphia-area horticulture, arboretums, public gardens, parks and waterways as seen through 1776, 1876 and 2026 time-slices.
First Capital Garden App (iOS/Android)
The First Capital Garden app (iOS/Android) makes it possible for local residents and international visitors to experience the Philadelphia region in a new way, moving through time to experience its past and present -- from it being the nation’s first garden city through to it becoming a more inclusive, 21st century world garden city.
The Semiquincentennial launch version will cover 3 time slices (1776, 1876 & 2026) and be available in English, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin language editions.

Restoration of Tinicum Wetlands as a Migratory Home for Sandhill Cranes
As explained in the next Tiger/Crane section, the Tinicum Wetlands to the southeast of Center City Philadelphia were the migratory home of sandhill cranes until that refuge was disrupted by mid-20th century development pressures. The long-term goal of First Capital Garden is to raise awareness and funding support for a partnership effort to restore that habitat.
Our principal partner for this effort will be the U.S. Fishery & Wildlife Service at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Grant funding sources may include the International Crane Foundation, among others. In addition to revenues generated by the First Capital Garden app to support this goal, the First Capital Garden program will raise awareness and build a broad-based constituency of support to help realize this long-term goal.
